I used to wonder what in the world people were doing. Did you ever feel that way? Why is that girl wearing an earring in her nose? Why does that guy have tattoos all over his body? What’s with the purple hair? Or the multi-colored finger nail polish? I just didn’t get it. I used to think that maybe everybody else was normal, and I was the strange one. Then I realized that maybe…just maybe…I was looking at things the wrong way.
There’s a story about a man who visits the largest rug making plant in the world. The manufacturing plant is over 2 million square feet. Rugs in this plant can be as big as a basketball court. Once inside, the man looks up at a rug being woven that was so big, it had to be suspended from the ceiling by wire cables. Looking up at this rug from the manufacturing floor was a sight to see, but the man noticed that nothing made sense from all the pieces of yarn that were being woven together. There were pieces of yarn with different colors that formed no recognizable object. There were pieces of yarn that just hung from the rug and weren’t tied to anything else. Looking at the rug from his perspective from the floor made the man wonder who could possibly appreciate this so-called “work of art”. Then, the supervisor told the man to climb the ladder next to rug and look at it from the top. Once he was looking down at the rug, the man was absolutely amazed. All the colored pieces of yarn were woven together to form a beautiful piece of art. In fact, it was the most beautiful work of art that the man had ever seen. You see, when the man looked at the rug from the bottom up, nothing made sense. But when he looked at the rug from the top down, it was absolutely beautiful and made perfect sense. This is us, isn’t it? We look at things from the bottom up, and it often looks bad. All we have to do is change our location…our perspective…and things can start to make sense.
Maybe you need to make a change…look at things from a different perspective. You never know how this might impact your life and the lives of the people around you.
