Life is Short. Celebrate often.

By definition, a celebration is the act of marking one’s pleasure at an important event or occasion.  Most often, we think of celebrations for major milestones like birthdays, weddings, promotions or retirements.  Don’t get me wrong, these are noteworthy and momentous, but why stop there?

In development, we understand that there are many ups and downs, and many wins and losses.  Through all of this, it is important to stay positive and not let the losses bring you down.  One way to do this is to celebrate and celebrate often.  All wins — big and small — deserve to be celebrated.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting you throw a party over every little thing, but I do recommend you give yourself credit when it is earned and due.

Did many months of cultivating a potential donor finally pay off?  Did you secure a presenting sponsor for your upcoming event? Did you finally get that hard-to-reach funder to call you back?  In the development world, these are all wins

Make yourself stop, smile, give a pat on the back, and celebrate in your own little way.  Have a piece of that candy you keep hidden in your bottom desk drawer, or enjoy a glass of wine when you get home.  Positive reinforcement like this will also help keep you motivated as you drive toward your goals.

These little celebrations should also be a part of your personal life outside of work.  Did you fix your leaky faucet or finally get your children to put their dirty clothes in the hamper?  Whatever it is, give yourself a high five, because it’s a win!
