I often think of the idea of success like riding a bike.
Stay with me here.
As kids, we grow up watching friends, older siblings, and parents ride bikes with ease. We see how it’s done. We know what goes into it: the balance, the pedaling, the steering. We’ve done the proper training with our toy bikes and training wheels, and we’ve built up the courage to take that first ride.
Should be easy enough, right?
If you’re anything like me, that first attempt to ride a bike probably ended in scuffed-up knees and tears of frustration. I had the idea in my head. I knew what to do. I practiced and I prepared. So what happened?
Success isn’t defined by knowing what to do. It’s about understanding how to do it – how to keep your balance when things get off track, how to keep pedaling even when it feels shaky, and how to steer confidently in the direction you want to go. It’s about taking your knowledge and developing the proper skills, confidence, and strategy to execute it effectively.
While I had goals and aspirations when taking that first bike ride, I wasn’t equipped with the proper skills, execution, or confidence needed to achieve the goal I had in mind.
See where I’m going with this?
Teach, Train, Transform: Our Approach to Fundraising
I’ve seen this same bike ride analogy play out time and time again in fundraising.
Fundraisers have an end goal in mind. They know what they’re working toward. They’ve done the legwork: building relationships, sharing impact, and conducting outreach. They’ve built up the courage to make “the ask.”
Only instead of cruising forward with ease, they’re left with scuffed knees and shaken confidence.
They walk away wondering, What went wrong? They had the idea. They knew what to do. But just like learning to ride a bike, knowing what to do isn’t the same as knowing how to execute it well.
That’s exactly why we developed our Teach, Train, Transform approach to fundraising at BrightDot. It’s our core methodology that goes beyond that “what” and dives deep into the “how”. It ensures you not only understand best practices but also develop the skills, confidence, and strategy to execute them effectively and sustainably.
Our Methodology: The What & The How
We know every organization is different. Different goals, different staff, different donors. That’s why we meet you where you are. We don’t take the training wheels off on day one and wish you good luck. We help steer you to where you want to go, teaching, training, and transforming both your team and organization into strategic fundraisers.
What exactly goes into our Teach, Train, Transform methodology? Let’s dive in.
Teach – We empower organizations with knowledge, providing the proven strategies, skills, expertise, and creativity needed to drive fundraising success. We break down complex fundraising challenges into clear, actionable insights, showing our clients how to incorporate human connection into everything they do.
Train – We turn knowledge into action because we believe success comes from practice, mentorship, and reinforcement. We offer one-on-one mentorship and coaching to build the confidence needed to successfully apply what you learn.
Transform – We create lasting, sustainable change for your organization, because true transformation goes beyond hitting your fundraising goals. It’s about building stronger teams, deepening donor relationships, and establishing long-term success.
The Methodology In Action: Wake Technical Community College
When our clients at Wake Tech came to us, they faced a challenge. As North Carolina’s largest community college with six campuses, three training centers, multiple community sites, and more than 70,000 students served each year, they had seen their fair share of fundraising campaigns. But despite their size and scale, they faced an internal issue: their executive leadership team and internal offices needed greater efficiency, stronger alignment, and overall organizational clarity to reach their full fundraising potential. That’s where we came in.
Through our work with Wake Tech, we applied our Teach, Train, Transform methodology to assess staff strengths and areas for growth, deliver one-on-one executive coaching with the Vice President of Development, and provide comprehensive training and advising to both staff and board members.
The result? A fully functional, cohesive, and efficient team that not only worked together seamlessly but also gained clarity on individual roles and expectations. It empowers them to drive their fundraising efforts forward with the skills, confidence, and strategy needed to sustainably succeed.
“What makes BrightDot different is their willingness to pivot based on the outcome of the assessment. They were flexible and willing to make changes to the scope of work based on our specific goals and objectives.” – Stephanie Lake, COO of Wake Tech Foundation

Enjoying the Ride
Fundraising is more than memorizing scripts or ticking off stewardship tasks. It’s about having the skills to keep your balance when conversations shift unexpectedly. It’s about knowing how to adjust your approach when a donor hesitates. It’s about executing with confidence, clarity, and understanding that even if you fall the first time, it’s part of building the skills to ride smoothly for the long haul.
Because just like riding a bike, success in fundraising doesn’t come from knowing about the journey. It comes from practicing, refining, and building the confidence to keep going, even after a few scraped knees along the way.
